Ask 10 homeowners exactly what their greatest plumbing-related fear is, and 9 out of 10 will say exactly the same thing: sewer back-up. Plumbing emergencies are scary enough when they don't involve human waste. Unfortunately (and we hate to be the bearer of the news here)… occasionally they do.

Fortunately, the really scary plumbing issues also tend to be relatively simple to avoid. The perfect way to prevent sewage back-up would be to learn why it happens in the first place. First, you learn what to avoid, and then… you avoid it! That being said, most sewage issues happen for one of 3 reasons. Specifically, these three reasons:

Tree roots

This is especially important for California residents such as us. Trees require moisture to thrive. If their access to moisture is restricted (due to, say, a drought), then trees are in trouble. When trees are hungry, they will begin looking for water anywhere they can get it--for example your sewer line.

Do not think you're safe just because you don't have trees all over your lawn, either. Roots can travel much. In fact, your sewer back-up could have occurred due to wandering roots from your neighbor's trees! Regular inspections and maintenance are the simplest methods to keep your home protected from tree roots.

Clogs

This really is the most frequent cause of sewage backup. You'd not believe the things people try to flush their toilets. A number of these items (obviously) really don't belong in a bathroom. Paper towels, grease, dearly-departed goldfish--you name it. The problem is, when you flush down things your toilet your pipes can not handle, your pipes… can't handle it. That's how clogs happen.

If you only detect one fixture clogging, that usually means the clog is most likely limited to a singular set of pipes. That is very good news! If you notice sewage back-up in fixtures throughout your home, however, then the clog is in your main sewer line. That is a severe issue, and one which you'll need expert assistance to fix. Before that happens, however, you need to avoid sewer clogs at the first place. See what you flush, never pour hot grease down drains, and make use of your garbage disposal with discretion!

A collapsed sewer line

Nothing lasts forever, which includes your sewer line. Based on the time of your home, your sewer lines could be assembled of obsolete material. These days most sewer lines are made from durable, heavy-duty plastic stuff. This wasn't always the case.
Older homes often have cast clay or iron piping. These substances may disintegrate and wear down over time until they crack or perhaps collapse. Whenever your sewer lines collapses, the sewage it processes doesn't have anyplace to go; therefore it comes back up. If you are worried about your sewer line, you can have it scrutinized any time. Experts can discover what your line is created of and catch problems before they inflict serious damage.

If you can prevent these three issues, you need to have the ability to prevent sewage back-up. You will… need to do this. Should you need help cutting away tree roots, clearing clogs, or inspecting your sewer line Charlotte, then let us know.
